“Coming out,” universally known as the anguish of a gay person publicly acknowledging their sexual orientation, is being adopted by undocumented citizens who plan to “come out” as illegals for the first time.
So-called “Dreamers” are hosting a “Coming Out Day” Wednesday afternoon in Texas where parents will announce their status as illegal and demand protection from President Obama.
Organized by the group United We Dream, the illegal parents of their children striving to get into college will reveal themselves for the first time.
One of those children, Eric Aguilar, a DACA-beneficiary from Edinburg, Texas, said this of his mother Graciela’s decision to “come out” later Wednesday.
“My mother is the backbone of our family, and seeing her come out for the first time is inspiring, but it’s also a moment to reflect on President Obama’s decision to delay justice and dignity to not only her, but to millions in our community. She’s coming out today to highlight to the president that his political inaction has high human consequences, leaving millions subject to deportation. The president promised he would act when Republicans wouldn’t, and we’re here to hold him to his promise to our community and to my mother,” he said in a statement promoting the “coming out.”
