Voters who went to the polls Tuesday in Prince George’s County municipal elections returned council members to their seats in several communities and gave at least one council member a promotion.
John Tabori, the Ward 5 University Park council member, received 116 votes in an uncontested race to become the community’s new mayor. Voters also elected three council members in uncontested races.
Tabori, a veteran of contested council races, said voters who cast ballots in single-candidate elections are really sending a message to government.
“That solidarity and that voice is important to us,” Tabori said.
Sometimes, Tabori said, votes in slow elections work to remind candidates of issues discussed during the campaign that need to be addressed. Other times, voters just want to show their support for a favorite candidate despite little chance of their loss.
“They’re saying, ‘Hey, we wish you well, and we’re willing to come out and vote for you,’ ” Tabori said.
