Major Player: Mike Duncan, RNC Chairman

Most conventions are so full of star power that the national party chairman is usually a mere functionary. But on Monday, the chairman of the RNC was center stage. With Hurricane Gustav playing havoc with the convention schedule, Duncan was forced to make quick decisions about which agenda items would be appropriate and which were absolutely necessary to make the convention official by law. Then he had to keep antsy delegates invested in the slim remaining schedule, with most of the big speeches canceled.
