Basketball coaches Williams, Frese on 17-person panel
University of Maryland president C.D. Mote has announced the members of the search committee that will identify candidates to be the school’s next athletic director. Debbie Yow resigned Friday after 16 years to take the same position at N.C. State. She was replaced on an interim basis on Monday by athletics CFO Randy Eaton.
The committee will be chaired by vice president of student affairs, Dr. Linda Clement, and includes head coaches from four sports — Gary Williams (men’s basketball), Brenda Frese (women’s basketball), Missy Meharg (field hockey) and Sasho Cirovski (men’s soccer).
Also on the 17-person committee are Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, iHopps CEO and former basketball All-America Len Elmore, volleyball player Lisa Scott, M-Club president Edwin Gregory, Terrapin Club president Rosalie Reggettz, associate AD of development Cheryl Harrison, assistant VP of alumni and relations and development Danita Nias, and faculty members Charles Wellford (chairman athletic council), Nicholas Hadley (vice-chairman athletic council), Lee Thornton (interim provost for equity and diversity), Saul Sosnowski (associate provost for international affairs) and James Harris (dean, college of art and humanities).
There is no timetable for the search process, according to a release. Mote, whose retirement becomes effective Aug. 31, is likely to leave the final decision to his successor, who has yet to be identified.
