Hillary Clinton plans outreach to Asian-American voters

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will launch Asian American Pacific Islanders for Hillary at an event in California later on this week.

The Democratic presidential front-runner will formally announce the group at an event Thursday in San Gabriel, Calif. The group is expected to hold events for Clinton among the Asian American Pacific Islander community.

Clinton is expected to discuss “what’s at stake in this election for the (Asian American Pacific Islander) community, and how she’ll fight for them as president,” according to a statement.

Clinton has launched similar campaign groups among other minority groups, such as African Americans and Latino voters.

She has taken criticism in recent weeks for attempts to reach out to minority voters on social media that have been seen as ham-handed, particularly a post by her campaign titled “7 Ways Hillary Clinton Is Just Like Your Abuela,” using a Spanish word for grandmother. The claim drew mockery and a “#NotMyAbuela” trend driven by Hispanics irked at the presumption the wealthy politician resembled their grandmothers.
