Senate Democrats rally staffers to serve as election observers to counter GOP
From Ramsey Touchberry
Senate Democrats have assembled more than 100 of their staffers to serve as election observers across nine states for the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The first-of-its-kind endeavor by Senate Democrats aims to match election-observer efforts from Republican Hill staffers through an existing government program, as Democrats express fears that President Donald Trump could try to thwart the election results. The Department of Justice plans to deploy around 1,000 poll monitors nationwide.
“Election observers are going to be doing just that: observing,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) told reporters Wednesday. “I don’t put anything past the Trump administration to try to interfere with the election, which is why we’re doing everything we can.”
The staffers have gone through legal training from the same law firm as the House election observer program, according to Padilla. Democrats did not disclose which states or polling sites their staffers will be deployed to, but said they’ll be in states with “contested Senate elections.” Staffers will observe and document any incidents on Election Day and in the days to follow during the certification process.
“The goal is simple,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “We deter interference, promote transparency, protect voter confidence, and ensure that fair elections are decided by the voters, not by some outside force, and not by partisan meddling.”
