Man opens fire in lobby of Trump golf resort in Miami

Police on Friday apprehended a man they believe fired shots in the lobby one of President Trump’s Miami golf resorts, according to authorities.

Police were called to the scene at Trump National Doral Golf Club at 1:30 a.m. There were no shooting victims, but the alleged shooter, 42-year-old Jonathon Oddi, was injured after being struck by police gunfire.

“#UPDATE: #MDPD and @DoralPolice responded to a shooting where a subject opened fire in the lobby of the @TrumpDoral. Officers exchanged gun fire, striking the subject,” the Miami-Dade Police Department posted to its Twitter. “Thankfully, there were no shooting victims. An officer suffered a broken wrist. More information to follow.”

The man pointed his handgun at people in the hotel, but did not shoot anyone. Oddi triggered the fire alarm, and people were able to flee, Director of the Miami-Dade Police Juan Perez said in a Friday morning press briefing.

“We don’t know what his intentions were,” Perez said. “It appears that he was trying to [lure] our police officers … into this gunfight. He did succeed, and he did lose. That’s the bottom line.”

Several reports claim the man was “yelling and spewing some information” about Trump while shooting.

Secret Service from the Miami Field Office are on scene and are working with law enforcement. No agents were on scene at the time of the shooting.

Perez told reporters that when officers arrived on scene the suspect had placed an American flag over the counter and had a handgun.

The health status of the shooter is not known, but he was transported to a local hospital shortly after being hit by police gunfire.
