Former Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. issued a threat to Reuters on Wednesday.
Falwell, who resigned Aug. 25 from his position amid a sex scandal involving his wife and a pool boy, told the outlet that it shouldn’t “mess with” him when it reached out for comment about a story regarding the school’s investigation into his tenure as president, which was announced Monday.
He initially referred the outlet’s questions to his legal and public relations spokespeople, but he then reached out and told them he looks forward to the investigation.
“I welcome it because it will prove that all you guys are liars,” Falwell said, taking a dig at the media. “You got nothing.”
The article focuses on how Falwell allegedly used his position as university president to enrich himself and those around him, but Falwell countered those claims by saying the university benefited from the decisions he made during his tenure.
The story of his wife’s affair was broken on Aug. 23 by the Washington Examiner, but it came a day before Reuters published its own story of Falwell’s wife’s affair with new details claiming that he was aware of and participated in the sexual activities between his wife and the pool boy. Some suspect Falwell told the Washington Examiner of his wife’s affair to get ahead of the more explosive allegations that followed.
Falwell took an indefinite leave of absence on Aug. 7 after posting an image to Instagram that the school deemed inappropriate. The image showed him and his wife’s assistant both wearing unzipped pants with part of his underwear visible. Falwell later deleted the post.
