Former first lady Michelle Obama said the impeachment proceedings against President Trump are “surreal” but are far from the largest adversity the country has faced.
“For the last impeachment hearing, a lot of young people weren’t around for that. So, this is all new. I don’t think people know what to make of it. But do I think we can come back from it? Oh yeah,” Obama said in a Monday interview with the Today Show. The former first lady made the comments during an overseas visit in Vietnam to encourage education for young girls.
“We’ve seen worse times, we’ve seen tough times in this country. You know, we’ve gone through depressions and wars and bombings and terrorist attacks, and we’ve gone through Jim Crow, and we’ve always come out stronger,” she added. “And that’s what we have to continue to believe because what’s our choice? To ball up in a corner and call it a day? Well, that’s not fair to this next generation that’s coming before us that are counting on us to get this right.”

House Democrats are holding more impeachment testimonies in front of the House Judiciary Committee after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced last week that the chamber would draft articles of impeachment against Trump. Some moderate Democrats in the House have expressed doubts about whether there is enough evidence against the president.
Allegations against Trump will likely include claims that he tried to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless they investigated former Vice President Joe Biden, who is currently leading the pack of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. House Democrats contend the president was trying to hurt Biden to give himself an advantage in the 2020 election.
