Sasse on Gorsuch: ‘He is not a puppet and he’s not out there attacking the president’

Sen. Ben Sasse said Thursday that Judge Neil Gorsuch was not attacking President Trump when the Supreme Court nominee talked to Sasse in a private meeting this week.

Earlier Thursday, the Nebraska Republican confirmed that Gorsuch had criticized Trump’s comments about federal judges in the meeting. The Nebraska senator then took to the Senate floor to say that Gorsuch was not attacking the president.

Gorsuch “is not a puppet and he’s not out there attacking the president of the United States,” Sasse said Thursday. “He’s meeting with us, trying to explain his view of an independent judiciary. He’s trying to affirm the same constitutional oath of office that all of us in this body have taken.”

Sasse’s afternoon remarks looking to clarify what happened in his meeting with Gorsuch comes as Trump met with some of Sasse’s Senate colleagues for lunch to discuss the Supreme Court nomination.
