House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats, issued a brief statement on Wednesday requesting that President Trump step in to convince the protesters who violently breached the Capitol to leave the building and the campus.
“We are calling on President Trump to demand that all protesters leave the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Grounds immediately,” said Pelosi, of California, and Schumer, of New York.
Protesters have fully invaded the Capitol, the Senate chamber, and Pelosi’s office.
Lawmakers have been evacuated. One woman was shot as she participated in the breach along with protesters.
Trump, in a tweet, called on protesters to remain peaceful. Earlier in the day, he gave an angry speech near the Capitol and called on protesters to march there. Trump and his followers believe the election was fraudulently called for Democrat Joe Biden.
