Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he has “no way” of knowing if the Russians bugged the Oval Office after Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a transcript to Congress of President Trump’s conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“Mr. Secretary, Vladimir Putin is offering Congress a transcript of that Lavrov Oval Office meeting. Do you think the Russians were bugging the Oval Office,” MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked Tillerson.
“I would have no way to know that,” Tillerson responded.
Tillerson walked away when Mitchell asked him what he thinks of Putin’s offer.
During a Wednesday news conference, Putin said he would provide a transcript of the Oval Office meeting if the Trump administration approved.
Trump came under fire last week when he barred U.S. press from his meeting with top Russian diplomats in the Oval Office.
Russia state media released photos showing Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak in the Oval Office.
Photos later released by the White House did not show Kislyak was present, a readout of the meeting made no mention of the Russian ambassador being there.
