Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter appeared to express support for rioters in Minneapolis following the controversial death of a black man while in police custody.
Irsa Hirsi, Omar’s 17-year-old daughter, retweeted a message from a Minneapolis-based socialist organization, referring to individuals rioting and looting as “comrades.”

Hirsi responded to criticism by arguing that she’s an “empathetic” person and denied supporting the riots.

Omar has been a vocal supporter of the riots that broke out following the death of George Floyd while in police custody, arguing that the violence resulting from his death is “warranted.”
“Our anger is just. Our anger is warranted,” the Minnesota congresswoman said about the riots. “And our priority right now must be protecting one another.”
Violence only begets violence.
More force is only going to lead to more lives lost and more devastation.
We must prioritize the safety of our community.
We can rebuild, but we cannot bring back lives.

Omar is currently fundraising off of the riots, telling her supporters, “It’s time to show up.”
Organizers in Minnesota are putting their lives on the line for justice. It’s time for us to show up for them.
