Super Bowl 2023: Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs advance to Super Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles scored the first seat in Super Bowl LVII, defeating the San Francisco 49ers by 24 points in the National Football Conference championship game Sunday afternoon, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.

Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona, will be the first time the Eagles have played in a Super Bowl since 2017, and the first time the Chiefs have played in the tournament since 2021. The Chiefs won the American Football Conference by 3 points Sunday evening.

“I’m not going to make this about me, this is a special city,” Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts said after the game. “They deserve everything that’s going on. We’ve got one more [game].”

Hurts’s victory comes after defeating rookie San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, the team’s third-string quarterback who sat out nearly two quarters due to an elbow injury. Multiple injuries affected the San Francisco lineup this season, including injuries to first- and second-string quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Purdy joined the team as the last person to be drafted in the NFL last year.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes narrowly defeated Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow in a 23-20 game in the final few seconds of the AFC championship. Burrow narrowly defeated Mahomes and Kansas City in the 2022 championship in a game that went into overtime.

Super Bowl LVII will take place at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 12, two weeks after the championship games. Chris Stapleton will perform the national anthem. Rihanna will headline the half-time show.
