Hastert sued by victim for failing to pay ‘hush money’

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was sued Monday by a man who says the former Republican House speaker did not follow through on payments promised to the alleged victim of a sexual assault decades earlier.

Individual A, or “James Doe” as identified in the lawsuit, filed a lawsuit in Kendall County Circuit Court on Monday claiming Hastert has only paid him $1.7 million of the $3.5 million compensation agreement, according to a report.

Hastert, 74, was investigated last year after he was caught illegally structuring bank withdrawals to pay off the victims, including Individual A. During the investigation, authorities discovered Hastert was paying off four individuals for sexual relations he had with the then-underage male students while he was a high school wrestling coach during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in October, but suffered a stroke in November, which delayed sentencing.

The defendant is scheduled to go before a federal court on Wednesday and faces up to five years in prison, but prosecutors have only recommended a six-month sentence.

The former Republican speaker, who served from 1999 to 2007, was not charged for the sex crimes due to the statute of limitations, but prosecutors have asked for a six-month sentence when Hastert receives his punishment for the extortion charges on April 27.
