Ivanka Trump dismissed freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s economic program laid out in the “Green New Deal,” arguing that most Americans “want to work for what they get.”
“I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last four years. People want to work for what they get,” the daughter of President Trump, and a White House adviser, told Fox News in an interview.
“I think this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want,” she said. “They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where there’s the potential for upward mobility.”
The New York congresswoman’s resolution proposes “a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.”
A poll conducted Jan. 4-26, weeks before the “Green New Deal” was unveiled, showed some support for tenets of the resolution. Thirty-nine percent of respondents supported the green jobs guarantee, 33 percent opposed it, and 27 percent didn’t know.
Trump said her father’s polices are “continuing to allow this economy to thrive” and could give him an edge in the 2020 election against Democratic positions.
“I think fundamentally if you ask yourself the question, ‘are we better today than we were yesterday or we were two years ago?’ The answer is, undoubtedly, yes,” she said. “So, as an American, families sitting down and thinking about their financial situation relative to a month ago or a year ago, America is doing very well and it stands in quite sharp contrast to the rest of the world. So, not only are we doing well, much of the world has slowed down in terms of the pace of their growth.”
