AOC to headline Green New Deal rally in DC next week

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., will headline a rally this month in Washington, D.C. promoting the Green New Deal.

Youth climate change organization the Sunrise Movement will stage a “Road to a Green New Deal Tour” rally at Howard University on May 13. The event could cause a headache for Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, who is concerned about the leftwards drift of her party and remarked recently that Democrats won back the House majority because: “We did not engage in some of the other exuberances that exist in our party.”

Sunrise Movement’s Varshini Prakash said she was “thrilled” to have Ocasio-Cortez headline the rally. “From fire-scarred California to areas of the plains devastated by flooding, people are hungry for a big vision to transform our economy in line with science and justice demands.”

The Green New Deal was introduced by Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described socialist, and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., back in February. The legislation has been derided by Republicans and some moderate Democrats as being unfeasible and untenably expensive, with estimates ranging up to $93 trillion in 10 years.

Some 2020 Democrats back the Green New Deal, with Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif., offering their support. Former Vice President Joe Biden, the early leader in the Democratic primary polls hasn’t taken a stand on it.
