A man and a woman died early this morning in a fire above the Dalite Food Market on Jefferson Street in East Baltimore, fire officials said.

Heavy smoke and fire were coming from a two-story brick building on the 2400 block of Jefferson Street when firefighters arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m., said Battalion Chief Kevin Cartwright.

The victims, who have not yet been identified, are believed to be in their 20s and of Korean descent and are thought to have lived above the store, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities did not find a functional smoke detector in the apartment.

No other injuries were reported.
