Republican senator chides Trump for calling for China to investigate Biden

Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse chided President Trump for encouraging the Chinese government to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

The Ukrainian government “should investigate the Bidens because how does a company that’s newly formed and all these companies, if you look at — and by the way, likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens,” Trump said to reporters on the South Lawn Thursday.

The comments sparked swift condemnation because similar remarks from Trump made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky led to the current impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives.

“Hold up: Americans don’t look to Chinese commies for the truth,” Sasse told The Omaha World-Herald on Thursday. “If the Biden kid broke laws by selling his name to Beijing, that’s a matter for American courts, not communist tyrants running torture camps.”

Sasse, who called the whistleblower complaint that was filed as a result of that Trump-Zelensky phone call “very troubling,” went on to insult House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff in his comments to the World-Herald.

“Congressman Schiff is running a partisan clown show in the House — that’s his right because the Constitution doesn’t prohibit clown shows, but fortunately, in the Senate, we’re working to follow the facts one step at a time,” Sasse said.
