A woman woke from a COVID-19-induced coma nearly six weeks after being put on a ventilator on the day she was scheduled to be taken off life support.
Bettina Lerman, 69, shocked her family and doctors when she woke up from the coma of her own accord just hours before they were going to pull the plug. Her family had already picked out a headstone and casket.
“We had a family meeting with the hospital because my mother wasn’t waking up. No matter what they [did], they couldn’t get her to wake up,” her son Andrew Lerman said. “They said that her lungs are completely destroyed. There’s irreversible damage — that it’s just not going to happen.”

On Oct. 29, Andrew Lerman got a call from the doctor at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, with the news that he needed to come quickly to the hospital because his mother had unexpectedly woken up. She did not suffer organ failure and was aware of her surroundings, which is rare for recently comatose patients. Her son said the prognosis was miraculous.
“My mother is very religious and so are a lot of her friends, and church, and everything else, and they’ve all been praying for her,” he said. “So they can’t explain it on the medical side. Maybe it’s on the religious side. I’m not that religious, but I’m starting to believe that there’s something that helped her. I don’t know.”

Bettina Lerman was visiting her son’s father in Maine from her home in Florida when she caught a serious case of coronavirus in early September. She is unvaccinated, and her family says she plans to get the vaccine after she recovers.
