A hardware problem with the Maryland State Board of Election’s Web site has been fixed and officials expect no more problems leading up to Election Day.

The site crashed for no more than one or two hours on Tuesday night and was back up running by 7:30 p.m., said Ross Goldstein, deputy state administrator for the state board.

A back-up server was used in the interim.

Although Tuesday was the absentee ballot application deadline, the problem was solely a hardware failure and not a site traffic issue, he said.

More than 3.4 million residents are now registered in Maryland, officials reported.
