Veteran investigative journalist Carl Bernstein said friends of President Trump believe he is “out of control.”
The Watergate sleuth told CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter on Sunday a “big underlying story” about Trump is his mental and physical health. This was part of a report on how White House sources “whisper” about the president’s “mood swings.”
“Looking at the president’s mental state, especially what his friends are seeing now, and they’re very concerned about his conduct,” Bernstein said on Reliable Sources. “They say he’s out of control. Some of those I’ve talked to, that’s their words: ‘Out of control.'”
National security is at risk, Bernstein warned, “if, indeed, the president is unstable.”
Bernstein additionally noted that Trump’s closest advisers, including former national security adviser H.R. McMaster, ex-chief of staff John Kelly, and former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, “all concluded that he’s unstable.” And he said the White House “covered up” why Trump made a seemingly nonroutine visit to Walter Reed in November, raising concerns about his physical fitness.
The White House released Trump’s third annual physical in June, which said he participated in a two-part examination, including the November afternoon he spent at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The memo reported no significant changes and that the president remains in healthy condition.
