Cecile Richards on Michelle Wolf’s abortion humor: ‘This isn’t a topic I make jokes about’

Former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said that while comedian Michelle Wolf was “doing her job” when she made controversial jokes about abortion during her White House Correspondents’ dinner routine, its not a topic she would make light of.

“Well, I mean, she’s a comedian, that’s her job,” Richards told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota. “This isn’t a topic I make jokes about because of course I see what women face in this country, just to access this care and how much stigma and shame there already is in America.”

Wolf joked on Saturday that Republicans can be “very anti-abortion” until their “secret mistresses” need one.

“I think she was also making the point that a lot of the folks, male politicians in particular, who rail against access to safe and legal abortion do so until its something that they actually find benefits themselves,” Richards said.

Michelle Wolf said that despite the controversy surrounding her routine, she has no regrets.

“I wouldn’t change a single word that I said,” Wolf said on NPR. “I’m very happy with what I said, and I’m glad that I stuck to my guns.”
