Outgoing government ethics chief hits back after White House accuses him of ‘leaking’

Outgoing director of the Office of Government Ethics Walter Shaub on Sunday called a White House statement on the nature of his departure “ridiculous.”

The statement, provided to ABC News, accused Shaub of attempting to embarrass the Trump administration by way of “leaking, tweeting and writing letters to Democrat members of Congress” rather than addressing any ethics concerns to White House officials.

On ABC’s “This Week,” Shaub disputed the charge.

“That’s just a ridiculous statement,” he said. “I’m the head of a federal agency and I make decisions about what information we’re going to release in an official way on behalf of the agency in order to communicate with the public.”

Shaub denied he was forced out of his position, but he said he resigned from his post “convinced that I’ve achieved all I can possibly achieve in this job.”

Shaub previously has said President Trump’s personal business appears to be profitting off his position in the White House.
