Grace Stanke is now wearing the legendary crown. The University of Wisconsin-Madison senior won this year’s competition Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The 20-year-old from Wausau, who was named Miss Wisconsin earlier this year, is studying to be a nuclear engineer.
She was also profiled in a video by the U.S. Women in Nuclear, a nonprofit organization the vision of which “is aimed at positioning the United States for the future of nuclear energy and technology through the advancement of women,” according to a statement on its website.
“As Miss Wisconsin, I have had so many opportunities to help represent and advocate for the nuclear industry, and I am so excited to see where those opportunities lead for the industry as a whole,” Stanke said.

Now, Stanke hopes to do that on a much bigger platform.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to compete alongside so many inspiring, brilliant, talented women. I hope to live up to the impeccable legacy of Miss America, serving as a positive role model for women of all ages and my community. It’s been an honor to represent the great state of Wisconsin and I look forward to the opportunity to change the world through my social impact initiative Clean Energy, Cleaner Future on the national stage,” Stanke said in a statement from the Miss America organization.
