A majority of people want to see President Trump out of office before the end of his term.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents in a Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted on Thursday and Friday, said their opinion most closely aligns with Trump getting removed from office via the 25th Amendment, impeached and removed via Congress, or having him resign. The remaining 43% of the 1,005 respondents surveyed said that the president should finish his term in office.
There is a split down party lines as to whether the president should stay in office for the last 11 days of his presidency given a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol and forced a lockdown because Congress was certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
Eighty-eight percent of respondents who identified as Democrats don’t want the president to complete his term, while less than a fourth of self-identified conservatives want him out early.
That divide is similarly polarizing among respondents when asked if they approve of the president’s actions after the insurgence.
Ninety-five percent of Democrats surveyed said they “lean toward,” “somewhat,” or “strongly” disapprove of the president’s actions, including a video he posted on Twitter in which he told the rioters “we love you” and “you’re very special,” but also told them to “go home now.” Comparatively, a majority of Republicans, 60%, said they “lean toward,” “somewhat,” or “strongly” approve of how the president reacted to the situation.
Another poll from Rasmussen reported that the president’s approval rating has actually gone up since the events at the Capitol.
The House is planning to introduce articles of impeachment against the president for “willfully inciting violence.” As of press time, 180 House Democrats have signed onto the resolution. The impeachment article will not be taken up in the Senate if it’s passed in the House, which would likely happen given the Democrats’ majority, until after Biden is inaugurated, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
