Cancer survivors honor those who help with their treatments

When David Weeks? wife, Marie, was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago, the news hit the family pretty hard.

But the medical professionals at the Howard County General Hospital Center for Breast Care and Maryland Oncology Center, where his wife received treatment, provided unparalleled support and compassion ? particularly Tina Beerman, the registered nurse who began the breast care center.

“She let us know that there were people who truly cared for [Marie Weeks?] welfare,” said David, who added that his wife is doing well.

“We received calls after her treatment, and they were a voice of hope.”

To give Howard County cancer survivors a chance to show their appreciation for the support they?ve received, Beerman, David and students in the civics class he teaches at Glenelg Country School organized the Celebrate Life Reception, which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Mulitz Theater in the school, which is in Ellicott City.

“This is a wonderful way to give back to those who have helped us,” said David, the school?s civic leadership director. “We have an opportunity to extend a sense of gratitude to the medical community for their support and medical expertise.”

Cancer survivors and their families will listen to stories from cancer survivors, including Dr. Stacey Keen, an Ellicott City physician and author of “Defeating Breast Cancer: A Physician?s Story of Healing, Martial Arts and Life.”

Brittany Henderson, a 14-year-old sophomore at Glenelg High who helped organize the reception, said she is looking forward to hearing from the cancer survivors.

“These women have been through so much, and yet they are so strong,” said Brittany Henderson, who hopes to become a pediatric oncologist.
