A large fire at a tire store and warehouse in northeast Washington continues to smolder a day later, and city officials are faced with a massive cleanup of contaminated water and debris.
D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter says the cleanup at Jimmy’s Tire Shop will take several weeks. There are thousands of gallons of contaminated water and foam in the building, and the structure is unstable.
Etter says authorities will bring in contractors to help remove hazardous debris and start peeling the building down to prevent a collapse.
Florida Avenue has been closed near the scene since Monday afternoon, blocking a busy commuter route.
This is one of two fires that have caused problems for morning drivers. Fire also damaged a nightclub Tuesday morning on Wisconsin Avenue near Georgetown.
