Snowden slams Clinton and Trump, but leaves Sanders unscathed

If Twitter musings are any indicator, Edward Snowden might have a favorite in the presidential race.

The former NSA contractor hit Hillary Clinton again on Wednesday over accusations that she violated federal classification laws, less than a week after he attacked Donald Trump for backing out of a promised debate. “Break classification rules for the public’s benefit, and you could be exiled,” Snowden said on Twitter. “Do it for personal benefit, and you could be President.”

If Clinton’s use of a private server to handle classified information put that information at risk, it could count as a violation of the Espionage Act, the same law Snowden stands accused of violating when he leaked information about U.S. surveillance programs.

He has made similar observations about Clinton a few times over the last several months, though he doesn’t seem to be a fan of her presumptive Republican opponent either. Snowden hit Trump on Saturday for backing out of a debate with Bernie Sanders, who runs a distant second to Clinton on the Democratic side of the presidential race. “Who would have imagined Donald Trump’s greatest fear was an economic debate?” Snowden said.

That makes Sanders the only remaining presidential candidate Snowden has not attacked on Twitter. That might be for good reason: Sanders said in 2014 that Snowden’s actions had shown how the NSA “abused its authority and violated … constitutional rights,” and suggested that Snowden be granted a plea deal.

Clinton and Trump, in contrast, have criticized Snowden and called for his conviction.
