Trump celebrates job growth, says Clinton would have caused a recession

Electing Hillary Clinton to the White House would have led to an economic depression, President Trump claimed Monday.

“If the Democrats had won the Election in 2016, GDP, which was about 1% and going down, would have been minus 4% instead of up 4.2%,” Trump tweeted Monday morning. “I opened up our beautiful economic engine with Regulation and Tax Cuts. Our system was choking and would have been made worse. Still plenty to do!”

Trump also boasted in another tweet that the GDP is now higher than the unemployment rate.

“The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!” Trump said.

In August, the U.S. saw a surge in job growth and the largest annual increase in wages in more than nine years, Reuters reported.

Friday’s employment report from the Labor Department showed that unemployment levels reached an 18-year low.

Republicans have touted their economic record as they head toward the midterm elections, and are hoping job growth is enough to convince voters to keep the House and Senate in control of Congress.
