Four people were rescued from a tubing incident in North Carolina on Wednesday night that left three people dead and two others missing.
The four people were part of a family group of nine that went tubing over a dam on the Dan River. The group’s tubes were reported to be tied together but came apart at one point before crossing a Duke Energy dam near a local power plant.

Duke Energy employees found the four recovered people at the bottom of the dam on late Thursday afternoon. Those rescued included a 14-year-old boy, his uncle, and two of his cousins.
The mother of the boy told WNCT 9 that he is doing “all right,” but he is tired. His grandfather added that the teenager was visiting his aunt and uncle from out of state. He was discharged from a local hospital on Thursday night.
“We learned from the four rescued that five more individuals were with them and were still missing,” Lt. Kevin Suthard, a spokesman for the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, told the Washington Examiner. “A search and rescue effort of the river last night located three of those five missing individuals. They were deceased. We are currently still searching for the other two missing.”
Authorities are conducting a search for the two missing people from Rockingham County to the Virginia borderline.

Rodney Cates, Rockingham County’s emergency services director, said he is hopeful the remaining two will be found alive.
