Firing back at criticism from Hillary Clinton supporters, Bernie Sanders’ campaign released a fundraising soliction tying Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump and saying the Vermont senator is the only Democrat who can beat the billionaire in November.
“They are saying that by continuing to campaign and fight for every vote, for every delegate, that we are helping Donald Trump,” Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver wrote in a fundraising email to supporters on Tuesday. The missivie was in reaction to charges Sanders was “giving aid and comfort” to Trump.
“Let me be clear, there is one candidate in this Democratic primary who Donald Trump said would make a “great president,” and it’s not Bernie Sanders,” Weaver added. The email features a picture of Clinton socializing with Trump at his 2006 wedding to Melania.
Preliminary polling shows that Sanders would beat Trump by a larger margin than Clinton in a general election. On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to run against Clinton and even hinted that he doesn’t want to battle with Sanders come November. On Tuesday morning Trump tweeted that Sanders should run as an independent, as he “has been treated terribly by the Democrats.”
As voters head to the polls in five primary states on Tuesday, the Sanders campaign added that despite Clinton’s lead they will stay in the race and “keep fighting hard for every vote and every delegate.”
