CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A bid to rescue an impoverished West Virginia county and its troubled schools has seen its ranks double as it lays the groundwork for the five-year effort, lawmakers learned Monday.

But hurdles remain as the Reconnecting McDowell project continues to map out a strategy for turning the county’s schools around while tackling community problems, lead coordinator Bob Brown told a House-Senate education subcommittee.
