Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, will become the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee and replace Rep. Doug Collins, a Georgia Republican, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
The decision was made, the Washington Examiner confirmed, after members of the House Republican Steering Committee voted unanimously on Thursday. Collins, who announced he will primary Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler this year, had to step down from his leadership post due to the campaign for another office.
Additionally, Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who is retiring after this term, will take over Jordan’s senior post as the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee.
Both Jordan and Collins are members of the House Freedom Caucus and aggressively defended the president during his impeachment.
The decision to have Jordan and Meadows in leadership posts in committees that will continue to investigate Trump throughout the election cycle was made one day after Trump was acquitted of two articles of impeachment in the upper chamber.
