British journalist Piers Morgan has a message for congressional Democrats: Forget impeaching President Trump and focus on finding a candidate who can beat him in 2020.
“There’s never been a successful impeachment in America. There’s not going to be a successful impeachment against Donald Trump,” Morgan said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Why would you push for it as you come into an election year?”
After the Justice Department released a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report last week, Democrats and media pundits have been poring over the details, highlighting instances of potential misconduct by Trump, and using those examples as fodder for discussion of potential impeachment proceedings.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said over the weekend he believes evidence of obstruction of justice is present in the Mueller report and that conduct is grounds for impeachment.
Still, there is resistance from the top against talk of impeachment.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other party leaders told the Democratic caucus their focus is to investigate Trump on a number of fronts, including his personal finances and businesses, in lieu of immediately pursuing impeachment.
Trump and his businesses sued House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., on Monday to block a congressional subpoena to obtain the president’s financial records.

“There’s never been a successful impeachment in America. There’s not going to be a successful impeachment against Donald Trump … is it right for the Democrats to go for an impeachment that will empower Trump?” pic.twitter.com/5W7MkiIQAY

“Politically, is it right for the Democrats to go for an impeachment which will in the end, I think, simply empower Trump to probably get reelected?” Morgan asked. “If I was a Democrat right now I would be like, let’s find a candidate that can beat Trump without all this stuff.”
At least two 2020 Democratic primary candidates, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Kamala Harris, have said they are in favor of impeaching Trump.
Morgan, a former CNN anchor and one-time winner of Trump’s reality show “Celebrity Apprentice,” has been critical of Democrats and national American media since Trump got elected.
“So it was all fake news … ” Morgan wrote in a recent column for the Daily Mail. “The Democrats, led by the demented Adam Schiff, screamed ‘COLLUSION!’ so often I’m amazed their larynxes didn’t explode. But at least they had an obvious political motive for wanting Trump gone.”
