Russia’s top diplomat told his American counterpart it’s unacceptable for U.S. forces to strike Syrian government forces following an air strike on pro-regime militia last month.
Reuters reported Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Saturday that the attacks are unacceptable in a call initiated by American diplomats.
“Lavrov expressed his categorical disagreement with the U.S. strikes on pro-government forces and called on him to take concrete measures to prevent similar incidents in future,” the ministry said in a statement to Reuters.
The U.S. attacked pro-government forces because the militia forces backed by Syrian President Bashar Assad posed a threat to American-backed Syrian fighters in the southern part of the country, officials said.
Russia has previously notified the Americans that bombing pro-government forces will hurt attempts to find a political solution to the Syrian civil war. It also warned against the U.S. violating Syrian sovereignty.
Syria is one of Russia’s foremost Middle Eastern allies, along with Iran.
