Dave Chappelle said his daughter preferred it when the country had a black president rather than President Trump.
“My daughter is 10. Trump is her first white president, and she thinks the whites are doing a terrible job,” the comedian said at a recent campaign event for presidential contender Andrew Yang.
Chappelle, 46, announced earlier this month that he was supporting Yang’s long-shot candidacy. The comedian has made it clear that even though he does not support Trump, he does not see the president’s supporters as bad people.
“I don’t look at Trump supporters as my enemy at all,” Chappelle said in Iowa. “I understand why people voted for Trump. I understand people are desperate. And I think that Andrew is right: You run against the reasons that Trump got elected.”
“I got friends on both sides of the political aisle. I got fans on both sides of the political aisle,” he continued. “A lot of people say professionally, it’s not wise to support any candidate, but this idea is so good that I think it should exist.”
Chappelle has been calling voters on behalf of Yang to get their support. “This guy is the origin of a platform that really does address where I think the country needs to go,” he said about the candidate’s campaign.
Yang, a tech entrepreneur-turned-Democratic candidate, is currently polling at just under 5% nationally in the presidential primary.
