GOP lawmaker: Bannon’s removal from NSC ‘welcome news’

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., said Wednesday that the removal of White House chief strategist Steve Bannon from the National Security Council was “welcome news,” and noted her past calls to get him off the key advisory panel.

“Steve Bannon’s removal from National Security Council is welcome news. I called for him to write himself out in Jan,” Ros-Lehtinen wrote on Twitter.

Bannon and Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert was both demoted from their NSC posts.

Bannon was named to the post after Trump reorganized the NSC in January. The move saw Bannon and CIA Director Mike Pompeo become “regular attendees” on the NSC’s principal’s committee, while chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford and the national intelligence director were removed.

Under the change announced Wednesday, Dunford and Dan Coats, the new national intelligence director, will now hold spots on the committee once again.
