Former assistant Chuck Driesell has left the Maryland basketball program to take over as head coach at The Citadel. But on his way out, he delivered coach Gary Williams a nice present, Seton Hall Prep point guard Sterling Gibbs.

The 6-foot-1 junior, who made a verbal commitment to the Terps late Monday night and was primarily recruited by Driesell, is the first Maryland recruit from the class of 2011.

He helps restock a position weakend by the departure of Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes. Class of 2010 recruits Terrell Stoglin (Santa Rita/Tucson) and P’Shon Howard (Oak Hill) arrive this fall. All three guards are rated three star recruits (out of five) by rivals.com.

Gibbs, the younger brother of Pittsburgh guard Ashton Gibbs, picked the Terps over Pitt, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Florida, Indiana, Wake Forest and Virginia.

“I really liked coach Williams’ personality,” Gibbs told NBE Basketball Report. “He’s a fiery coach and he gets the most out of his players.”
