California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa has won re-election in his southern California district, the Associated Press projected Monday evening.

Issa, an eight-term congressman from the 49th District of the Golden State, had been in a race that was said to be too-close-to-call for nearly three weeks. As of Monday morning, Issa led Democratic challenger Doug Applegate by more than 2,000 votes with 1,000 ballots uncounted, according to the Los Angeles Times. By Monday afternoon, San Diego County election officials were comfortable calling the race for the incumbent.

Issa is the wealthiest member in the House of Representatives, as well as the former chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Applegate is a retired U.S. Marine colonel within the northern San Diego district, which includes the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.
