Rep. Martha Roby, R-Ala., will face Bobby Bright in a runoff election for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District after the four-term congresswoman failed to secure a majority of votes in Tuesday’s Republican primary.
Roby’s popularity was eroded by attacks from her primary challengers for comments she made during the 2016 election cycle critical of then-candidate Donald Trump. In the wake of the “Access Hollywood” tape, Roby slammed Trump as an “unacceptable” candidate and suggested he step aside as the Republican nominee.
Roby, however, defended her voting record on the campaign trail and said she had a “good working relationship” with the White House, according to the Associated Press.
Bright was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 2008, serving only one term before he was defeated by Roby in 2010. He then changed parties to contest in the Republican primary, per AL.com.
The winner of the runoff will compete for the flippable seat against Democrat Tabitha Isner, who is running her first campaign in the district.
