Biden to make campaign pitch to Florida seniors on drug prices and Social Security

President Joe Biden will make a pitch to Florida seniors this afternoon that Republicans are after their benefits if they take control of Congress.

Biden has repeatedly said that the GOP wants to put Social Security and Medicare “on the chopping block” if they take the House and the Senate. He’ll drive that message home in senior-rich Florida, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

“We [Democrats] are trying to protect Medicare, we are trying to protect Social Security, we are trying to lower costs for the American people,” she said aboard Air Force One en route to the Sunshine State. “These are issues that are important to the American people, that are critical to the American people.”

BIDEN CLAIMS REPUBLICANS WILL CUT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE. WILL THEY?

The president’s claims about Republicans slashing the sacred programs stem from a plan released by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), which claims under point six that “all federal legislation sunsets in 5 years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.”

Democrats have hammered this point ever since, even though Scott clarified that his plan is to reform the program rather than cut it and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the proposal a nonstarter.

Jean-Pierre referred to Scott’s plan on Tuesday, saying that the public is connecting with Biden’s message.

“Under their [Republicans’] vision, millions of Americans would lose health care coverage, benefits, and other healthcare protections,” she said. “Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security would be on the chopping block every five years.”

Biden is scheduled to speak in Hallandale Beach, Florida, at 3 p.m.
