Trump picks Indiana health consultant for Medicaid role

Seema Verma will be nominated to serve as the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by President-elect Trump.

Trump’s transition team announced his intention to nominate Verma, the president, CEO and founder of SVC, Inc., to the post Tuesday morning. SVC is a national health policy consulting company.

Verma has worked for two decades on policy and strategy projects related to Medicaid, insurance and public health, Trump said.

“I am pleased to nominate Seema Verma to serve as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,” Trump said in a statement. “She has decades of experience advising on Medicare and Medicaid policy and helping states navigate our complicated systems. Together, Chairman Price and Seema Verma are the dream team that will transform our healthcare system for the benefit of all Americans.”

Verma is close to Vice President-elect Mike Pence and served as the leader of Indiana’s health reform effort following the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.

She designed Healthy Indiana Plan, which the transition team called the country’s “first consumer directed Medicaid program” and she helped Pence come up with the program’s waiver proposal.

She has also worked for the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County in Indiana as vice president of planning.

“I am honored to be nominated by President-elect Trump today,” Verma said in a statement. “I look forward to helping him tackle our nation’s daunting healthcare problems in a responsible and sustainable way.”
