Trump touts ‘incredible’ fundraising amid campaign’s disastrous financial report

Donald Trump is doing damage control after a disastrous electoral filing released Monday revealed that his campaign is entering the general election with $1.2 million cash on hand.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee raised a little over $3 million last month and lent $2.2 million to his campaign. Concerns were raised over Trump appearing to have spent more than $4 million in May despite having fewer than 50 paid staffers and not partaking in traditional advertising.

“The month of June represents the first full month of fundraising activity for the campaign and this will be reflected in the June FEC report,” the Trump campaign said in a statement Tuesday morning.

According to the campaign, Trump, who self-funded in the GOP primary, did not hold his first legitimate fundraising event until the final week of May. During an interview Tuesday morning with NBC News, the billionaire claimed he raised $12 million last weekend alone during a fundraising swing through Arizona, Nevada and Texas.

“The positive response to our fundraising efforts so far is a further indication that the country does not want yet another corrupt politician like crooked Hillary,” the campaign stated.

Trump suggested his campaign could have “unlimited ‘cash on hand'” in the general election if he decides to contribute more of his personal fortune to his campaign committee. According to the Federal Election Commission, Trump has so far lent $43.5 million to his campaign for which he has promised not to pay himself back.

“Our campaign is leaner and more efficient, like our government should be,” he said Tuesday.

For comparison, Trump’s predecessor, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, raised $23 million in May 2012 and ended the month with about $7 million cash on hand.
