A Donald Trump presidency is not just “abnormal,” it is “f—-ed up,” said John Oliver on Sunday night.
The liberal comedian spent the entirety of the season finale of his Emmy-winning HBO show “Last Week Tonight” breaking down and tearing into Trump’s upcoming four years in the White House.
He implored his viewers not to flee to Canada, but rather “fight” in future elections which he said is the “below the barest minimum” of what they can do.
“For the last eight years, we’ve had a president we could assume would generally stand up for the rights of all Americans. But that is going to change now,” Oliver said.
In order to stand up for people he said are now under threat, Oliver asked his viewers who could spare the time or money to support organizations that will need help under a Trump administration, including Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights, the National Resources Defense Council, the International Refugee Assistance Project, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Trevor Project and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
Oliver also asked for help for the press.
“The press is going to face challenges,” Oliver said, because Brietbart News’ Stephen Bannon is Trump’s chief strategist and because Trump threatened during the campaign to open up federal libel laws.
In order to combat this “attitude of punishing the press,” Oliver urged his viewers to support “actual journalism” by buying subscriptions to the likes of the New York Times and the Washington Post, two newspapers that Trump has repeatedly griped against, including this weekend. Oliver also suggested supporting ProPublica, an independent investigative journalism non-profit.
“The point is, if we don’t get actively involved to at least mitigate Trump’s damage things will not be OK,” Oliver said.
“It is going to be too easy for things to start feeling normal — especially if you are someone who is not directly impacted by his actions — so keep reminding yourself: this is not normal,” Oliver said.
“Write it on a Post-it note and stick it on your refrigerator, hire a skywriter once a month, tattoo it on your ass, because a Klan-backed misogynist internet troll is going to be delivering the next State of the Union address, and that is not normal. It is f—-ed up,” Oliver said.
