Poor visibility shuts down Chicago air show

CHICAGO (AP) — Officials canceled the Chicago Air and Water Show Sunday because of poor visibility.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1o33hag ) the show was delayed three hours before getting underway at 1:30 p.m. Low clouds along Lake Michigan did not lift, however.

Officials suspended the show at 2 p.m. and canceled it at 3 p.m. It also ran Saturday.

The National Weather Service at Chicago says “rare low clouds” affected the show. Officials say such clouds — those below 1,000 feet — have been seen on fewer than 3 percent of August days since 1973.

It’s not the first time weather conditions have affected the event. The 2011 show was canceled because of poor weather.
