President Trump was being facetious when he told a bipartisan group of U.S. senators Tuesday evening that reaching a deal on healthcare would be “easy,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday.
“I think if you watch the tape, it was a lighthearted moment,” Spicer said.
At a reception for senators and their spouses, the president told attendees, “I know that we are all going to make a deal on healthcare. That’s such an easy one. I have no doubt that that’s going to happen very quickly.”
It was unclear to reporters and lawmakers gathered in the room whether the president was joking.
“No,” Spicer said Wednesday when asked if Trump truly believes that reaching a deal on healthcare is an “easy” task for Congress.
Trump “was having fun at the time with the senators there,” he added.
