Former White House director of legislative affairs Marc Short is returning to the Trump administration to serve as Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff.
Short, who left the White House in June, is the first high-ranking administration official to return to a new post after resigning a previous one.
The news was announced at a Pence staff meeting Tuesday morning, a person with direct knowledge told the Washington Examiner.
Short did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his new role.
Although influential in helping push Trump’s 2017 tax reform legislation and with helping confirm Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, Short left the White House last year citing “diminishing returns” ahead of the midterm elections.
Although many former White House aides penned tell-all books, Short instead has served as a fellow at the University of Virginia. Short previously worked as a Pence aide on Capitol Hill during the Obama administration.
Short will replace Nick Ayers, the young Pence surrogate who left his position after turning down President Trump’s December offer to be White House chief of staff.
