GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy says Mike Flynn should be given immunity to testify

Republican Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy thinks former national security adviser Gen. Mike Flynn should be granted immunity so the American people can hear what he has to say.

Cassidy, speaking on CNN Friday, said Flynn could be the key to unraveling any possible connections between President Trump’s team and the Russian government.

“I think it’s a good idea,” the Republican said. “Congress needs to get to the bottom of this, the American people are intensely interested in this. There’s a lot of, kind of, do we know it’s true, or do we not. Flynn, I think, maybe can unlock this. If he can, I think it maybe moves this forward.”

Reports surfaced Thursday that Flynn is asking the FBI and investigators at the House and Senate Intelligence Committees for immunity from criminal prosecution if he tells his side of the story about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Flynn’s lawyer said in a statement he has a story to tell, but wants certain guarantees in order to tell it.

Trump himself tweeted Flynn’s desire to get immunity is appropriate because the investigation and media reports about it are turning into a “witch hunt.”
