Biden takes the wheel: ‘Car guy’ Joe jokes he’s ditching Secret Service for new Corvette

Self-professed “car guy” President Joe Biden cracked a joke at the Detroit Auto Show Wednesday, claiming he would ditch his Secret Service detail for a new Corvette.

Biden, who got into the driver’s seat of an orange Chevrolet Corvette Z06, fired up the engine and told General Motors CEO Mary Barra to inform the head of his detail that he would not need a ride home.

“I tell you what, tell the head of my Secret Service detail I’m driving home,” Biden joked. “Want to come with me?”

The joke came as the president toured the auto show, which included a mix of U.S.-manufactured hybrid, electric, and combustion vehicles from Ford, Chevrolet, General Motors, and Stellantis. Biden additionally greeted union workers, CEOs, and local leaders at the show, which he attended to promote his economic plan and the subsequent electric vehicle manufacturing surge.

Biden is expected to announce his approval of the first $900 million in infrastructure money to build chargers for electric vehicles across 53,000 miles of the national highway system during a press conference in Detroit Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

The president recently took a spin in his personal green 1967 Stingray with talk show host Jay Leno for a segment on CNBC’s Jay Leno’s Garage. However, former and current U.S. presidents are not allowed to drive on open roads, with the Secret Service instead taking the wheel because they are specially trained in evasive driving maneuvers.

The segment was filmed at a secret service training center in Maryland.
